Hindu Traditions

The Ganges Purifies People

  • According to the Indians, The Ganges River is considered very sacred.

  • In Hindu Traditions, The Ganges River is the symbol of Purification.

  • In their belief, burning the corpes near the Ganges and throwing their ashes into it makes their souls free.

The Holy Cows

  • I think this is the most-known thing about hindus. Cows are very sacred for them.

  • In their culture, they don't hurt cows and they never eat them.

  • If you've been to India you've seen a lot of cows in the streets.

  • If you see someone holding the cow's tail, he probably swears.

  • A bit disgusting but they believe cow's pee puryfies them, also they rub cow's feces to their head. Nowadays, they think cow's pee and feces protect them from coronavirus.

  • If someone kills or hurts a cow, he can't clean up, shave thir hair and beard, or cut their nails between 6 and 12 months. Also he can't contiune his social and work life. When the time is over, he feasts under a sacred tree then burns the leaves in plenty of oil. They believe that, it cleanses them from sins.

Commiting Suicide is Appreciated

  • Commiting a suicide isn't considered a sin in India.

  • On th contrary, commiting suicide is appreciated.

  • First, the person fasts for 3 days an chooses how to commit suicide.

  • Another similar thing is leaving very sick and old people beside the Ganges.

  • When the Ganges River rises, it sucks the person in and kills him. If he run away before the Ganges rise, he loses his honor and will not be respected again.

Marrying Girls to a Dog

  • People marry their doughters with a dog when they turn 7.

  • They think dog will protect her until she will be married.

Drahoma Tradition

  • The most common tradition is the Drahoma Bride Price.

  • This is the opposite of our bride price tradition, because when they marry groom doesn't give the bride price, Bride gives it.

  • Because of this, people don't want to have doughter.

Snake-Playing

  • The snake-playing business made by the poor people in India to earn money first, then it became the symbol and tradition of India after a while.

  • You can see a Snake-Player everywhere. Also this takes the attraction of the tourists a lot.

Marrying the Frogs

  • One of the Indian traditions that is dificcult to understand is marrying frogs.

  • If you ask why. Because Rain God wants that.

The Holi Festival

  • The most colorful and famous Indian tradition is absoluatly The Holi Festival.

  • In Holi Festival, everyone throws paints everywhere.

  • Hindus celebrate the arrival of spring in this festival. The other aim of the festival is, entertaining the old people and make them forget their lonelisses.
